The majority of the ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) approved, in a virtual plenary session that ended this Wednesday (6), the preliminary decision of Minister Luís Roberto Barroso that extended the suspension of evictions and forced removals until June 2022.
Ministers Dias Toffoli, Edson Fachin, Cármen Lúcia, Luiz Fux and Alexandre de Moraes accompanied Barroso in the decision that suspended the evictions. The decision was motivated by the Covid-19 pandemic and its effects on the economy.
Minister Ricardo Lewandowski (accompanied by Edson Fachin) gave an even broader vote to ensure the suspension of collective evictions and evictions of vulnerable people while the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic last.
Minister Nunes Marques followed Barroso’s vote with reservations, in the sense that he defended that the measure not be extended beyond the deadline, considering that the epidemiological scenario presents improvement in Brazil.
Minister André Mendonça, on the other hand, differed from the rapporteur and was against the extension of the suspension. Last week, Barroso extended the deadline, which would end on March 31.
