STF forms majority to maintain discounts for low-income youth on interstate buses

The Federal Supreme Court (STF) formed a majority this Wednesday (16) to deny a lawsuit that questions the Youth Statute, which reserves free seats on interstate buses and also discounts of 50% on the value of tickets for low-income youth. .

The action was presented by the Brazilian Association of Land Passenger Transport Companies.

The rapporteur is Minister Luiz Fux, who voted against the action. In his understanding, the free spaces do not have a direct impact on transport companies.

“Reserving free and low-cost parking spaces for low-income youth does not imply a disproportionate burden on public transport service concessionaires,” he said.

Justices Kassio Nunes Marques, André Mendonça, Alexandre de Moraes, Luiz Edson Fachin and Cármen Lúcia followed the rapporteur and voted to dismiss the action.

The judgment of the action continues this Thursday (17) with the vote of the remaining justices (Dias Toffoli, Ricardo Lewandowski, Luís Roberto Barroso, Gilmar Mendes and Rosa Weber).
