STF sends Presidency and Ministry of Health to explain policies on legal abortion

The Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Edson Fachin gave the Presidency and the Ministry of Health a period of five days to explain public policies on legal abortion.

Four civil society entities filed a request with the Supreme Court seeking “guarantees” of women’s rights in authorized cases of legal abortion in Brazil, such as rape.

In the decision, Fachin says that “the situation narrated by the applicants is quite serious and seems point to a pattern of systematic violation of women’s rights. If even the actions that are authorized by law do not have the support and reception by the State, it is difficult to imagine that the long history of inequality between men and women can one day be mitigated”.

The request reached the STF after the case involving an 11-year-old girl.

After the government’s explanations, Fachin gave a period of three days for the manifestation of the Attorney General of Republic.
