STF will maintain ‘supreme surveillance’ for the holding of this year’s elections, says Fux

The president of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Minister Luiz Fux, said, this Friday (1st), that the Court “will remain vigilant” to “keep the Federal Constitution” and that it will maintain “supreme vigilance in favor of the health of of elections in our country” this year.

“The Federal Supreme Court will remain vigilant and always up to its most precious mission: to guard the Federal Constitution, with zeal for legal security and with attention to the constitutional sentiment of the Brazilian population, maintaining its supreme vigilance in favor of the health of the realization of the elections in our country”, said Fux.

In a speech at the closing session of the Supreme’s activities this Friday (1st), Fux cited several actions taken by his management and STF decisions in the first half of 2022.

One of the points cited by Fux was the establishment of partnerships to combat STF disinformation with organizations that work in this direction.

According to the president of the STF, this was necessary in the face of “false or distorted news” about “the content of the decisions taken by this Court” and also in relation to “its own ministers and servants”.

“In a scenario of a significant increase in false or misrepresented news – both about the content of the decisions taken by this Court, as well as about its own ministers and servants – institutional reinforcement has become urgent to understand how this disinformation is propagated and what countermeasures can be taken. be taken in order to guarantee to Brazilian society clear, real, objective and true information about the Court’s performance”, said the minister.

According to Fux, “these agreements have generated rich discussions and allowed substantial practical advances, such as the improvement of the Court’s technological resources for a faster identification of disinformation practices and the training of civil servants, professional journalists and digital influencers to adequately confront this practice that is so harmful to democracy”.

Agenda for the 2nd semester

The president of the STF also mentioned some cases that will enter the Supreme Court’s agenda in the resumption of the 2nd semester, in August. Among them, the main ones involve questioning the new Administrative Improbity Law, as discussed with the president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), and leaders of the Chamber this week, and questions involving the public administration spending ceiling.

In addition, according to Fux, lawsuits involving the right to health, transportation, confidentiality of personal data, environmental law and various labor rights will also be judged.

According to the president of the STF, these issues should be analyzed until the end of his term, at the beginning of September. Minister Rosa Weber, who takes over the Supreme Court on September 9, should define the issues after her inauguration, said Fux.
