Chris Rock returned to the stage Wednesday night for the first time since Will Smith slapped him at the Oscars on Sunday.
The comedian made his first public comments about the incident. In his first of two shows, he was greeted by the audience at the Wilbur Theater in Boston (USA) and was applauded for several minutes. With tears in his eyes, Rock thanked the crowd for the gesture before starting his repertoire.
“How was your weekend?” he joked, to which the audience responded with laughter. “I don’t have a lot of shit ready about what happened so if you came to hear this I had a whole show I wrote before this weekend.”
“I’m still processing what happened so at some point I’m going to talk about this shit. And it’s going to be serious and funny, but now I’m going to crack some jokes,” she continued.
The comedian is currently on his “Ego Death” tour. Rock returned to the stage for a second show about an hour later, and was met with loud applause once again.
“I wrote a show before all this nonsense happened,” he said. Rock reiterated that he plans to talk about the Oscar incident in more detail at some point.
“I haven’t spoken to anyone, despite what you’ve heard out there,” he said, in possible reference to claims that he spoke to Will Smith after the incident.
On Wednesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that it had opened “disciplinary proceedings” against Smith for his actions at the Oscars ceremony.
The actor issued an apology on Monday in a statement posted on social media, calling his behavior “unacceptable and inexcusable.”
“I’d like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and wrong. I’m embarrassed and my actions don’t indicate the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness,” Smith wrote.
In a statement Wednesday, the Academy said Smith was asked to leave the ceremony after the incident “and declined.” The Academy said it recognizes that he “could have handled the situation differently.”
