British singer Sting 73, stated that the allegations against the American music producer Sean “Diddy” Combs do not “tarnish” the song’s legacy “Every Breath You Take “. The 1983 hit by the band The Police was sampled by the rapper in the song “I’ll Be Missing You”, released in 1997.
At the moment, the producer – also known as P. Diddy – is imprisoned in New York, awaiting trial for the crimes of human trafficking, extortion and sexual abuse.
Despite the ongoing case, Sting said that the controversies do not affect his view of the song. “No. I mean, I don’t know what happened to Diddy. But that doesn’t tarnish the music for me. It’s still my music,” the star told the Los Angeles Times.
“I’ll Be Missing You” was created in honor of the late rapper Notorious B.I.G. but Diddy only obtained permission from Sting to use the excerpt after the track’s release. However, the lead singer of The Police confessed that the song generated an impressive financial return.
In 2003, he commented: “These guys just take their stuff, put it on a record and sort out the legal issues later. Elton John said to me: ‘You need to hear ‘I’ll Be Missing You’, it will make you a millionaire!’ I replied: ‘I’m already a millionaire!’ and he added: ‘So, you’re going to be a millionaire twice!’ I was able to pay for some of my children’s college education with the proceeds.”
