Stolen car rolls over after police chase in Rio; three men are arrested

Three men were arrested in the act, accused of committing serial robberies this Sunday (31) in the Grajaú region, north of Rio. The group was detained after a police chase that ended with the vehicle used by the criminals overturning.

According to information from the state Government Secretariat, the accident occurred because the criminals crashed their car into a taxi, at Rua São Francisco Xavier, in Tijuca.

After the collision, the thieves tried to escape and opened fire on the police. During the confrontation, two criminals were shot and taken to the Souza Aguiar Hospital, in the central region of the city.

According to the secretariat, one of the detainees was wearing an electronic ankle bracelet. According to agents, a revolver and five cell phones were seized. The car used by the criminals, a black Renault Sandero, was identified as a vehicle stolen on the same day, in the Méier region.

In a statement, the Government Secretariat informed that one of the victims of the criminals has already presented himself at the 20th DP (Vila Isabel).

“In addition to the phone, they allegedly stole necklaces, rings and beers, in addition to the victim reporting that the criminals put a gun to his six-year-old son’s head,” the agency reported. The identity of the men has not been released.

Other incidents were recorded during New Year's Eve in Rio. According to information from the Military Police, a man with an outstanding arrest warrant for attempted murder was arrested in Copacabana after identification using the facial recognition system. He was taken to the 13th DP (Ipanema).

Still in Copacabana, four men were detained and 12 teenagers were apprehended. Cell phones, money and other stolen belongings were also recovered by the police, in addition to 102 sharp objects.
