Russian police say they have found diamonds and precious stones buried in a forest worth more than 1.8 million euros, which they hid after a robbery carried out by a Colombian suspect during 2018 Soccer World Cup.
Police released photos showing plastic bags covered in mud, full of rings and pins, which they found in a forest in the city of Kazan, where Colombian suspect Edgar Alejandro Valero Valero confessed to hiding.
Valero Valero was arrested in Argentina in 2019 and extradited to Russia earlier this year, according to police in a statement yesterday. It was not possible to contact the suspect’s lawyer to comment on the case.
The jewelry, worth 160 million rubles (1.8 million euros) had stolen during their transfer to an exhibition in the city of Kazan, where they were to be exhibited and was one of the cities that hosted the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Russia during the World Cup had lifted the strict requirements normally required for a visa to accommodate thousands of foreign fans who wanted to watch the football tournament.
