Stoltenberg: Announces meeting of officials from Sweden, Finland and Turkey on NATO membership

Jens Stoltenberg announced that a meeting of top officials is scheduled in the coming days, coming from Sweden, Finland and Turkeyto discuss the issue of joining NATO of the two Nordic countries.

According to Reuters, the secretary general of the North Atlantic Alliance said that “I am in close contact with Turkish President Erdogan and the leaders of Finland and Sweden.”

It is recalled that Turkey disagrees with the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO, because it considers that they provide shelter to members of the PKK, which Ankara recognizes as a terrorist organization.

In fact, the advisor to the Turkish president, Ibrahim Kalinhe had relevant telephone communication with the Advisor to the President of the United States, Jake Sullivan. Kalin told US counterpart Ankara wants “concrete steps” taken for the “terrorist organizations” – as he calls them – that exist in Finland and Sweden, in order to consider their candidacy for NATO membership.
