Finland and Sweden could join NATO quickly if they decide to apply for membership in the military alliance, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said today, according to Reuters.
“If they decide to apply, Finland and Sweden will be warmly welcomed and I expect the process to proceed quickly,” Stoltenberg told reporters in Brussels, adding that he intended to speak with the Finnish president later in the day.
He said he was confident that arrangements could be made for the interim period between the Nordic countries’ request and formal ratification in parliament and all 30 NATO members.
“I’m sure there are ways to bridge this gap in a way that is satisfactory and works for both Finland and Sweden,” Stoltenberg said.
Russia, with which Finland shares a 1,300-kilometer border, has said it will develop nuclear weapons and supersonic missiles in its Baltic enclave, Kaliningrad, if Finland and Sweden decide to join NATO.
