“NATO has not yet seen any real de-escalation on the Russian side of the border with Ukraine,” said Jens Stoltenberg, secretary-general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Reuters agency.
The secretary general NATO clarified that if the Russian forces have left the points from which military equipment is withdrawn, then they can be immediately rebuilt in the same places, so we can not talk about any kind of de-escalation.
Mr. Stoltenberg also noted that the Alliance has not received any response from the Russian side to its proposals for collective security, while adding that NATO is ready to enter into a dialogue with Moscow on bilateral relations.
He added, however, that the Alliance could not compromise on its fundamental values.
Finally, he said that NATO is considering the possibility of deploying more troops in the eastern wing of the Alliance, in the long run. Specifically, he spoke about battle battalions in Romania, under the leadership of France.
He noted that NATO has increased the Alliance’s presence in the Eastern Wing since 2014 due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the Russian Federation’s illegal annexation of the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea.
