Stoltenberg: The progress of the Ukrainians is significant, they can repel the Russian forces

The Ukrainian army’s recapture of the port city of Liman shows that Kyiv is making progress and is able to push back Russian forces, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said today.

“We saw that they managed to capture a new city, Liman, and this shows that the Ukrainians are making progress and are able to repel the Russian forces thanks to their courage, their bravery, their skills but of course also thanks to the advanced weapons they offer the US and other allies,” Stoltenberg pointed out while speaking on NBC’s “Meet the Press” show.

He estimated that the best way for the international community to oppose Russia’s annexation of four regions of Ukraine is to continue supporting the government of Kiev. When asked about Ukraine’s request to join NATO with fast-track procedures, Stoltenberg replied that “any decision to join must be made with the unanimous approval of the 30 allies.”

He also emphasized that the Alliance supports the investigation into the suspected sabotage of the Nord Stream natural gas pipelines. “Any deliberate attack against critical NATO infrastructure will be met with a strong and joint response in all respects,” Stoltenberg concluded.
