Ukraine must prevail as a sovereign, independent nation in Europe and it is in everyone’s interest to support it, said its Secretary General NATO Jens Stoltenberg. Coming to the Council of EU Defense Ministers in Brussels, he noted that Vladimir Putin cannot be allowed to win.
Asked whether some of Ukraine’s allies would like to start talking to the Russians, Jens Stoltenberg replied that it is up to Ukraine to decide what are the acceptable terms for negotiations and more importantly what are the acceptable terms for any agreement.
“The responsibility of NATO allies is to support Ukraine to defend itself, because this is also in our interest to show that we defend the rule of law and international law,” he added, pointing out that “wars are unpredictable. No one can say how and when this war will end.”
“What we can say is that the likelihood of an acceptable outcome from the negotiations increases more the military support that should be provided to Ukraine, because so far we have not seen a real will from President Putin to negotiate an acceptable solution for Ukraine . So the only way to do it is to convince President Putin that he won’t win on the battlefield. And the only way to achieve that is by strengthening Ukraine’s military capability, by providing support.”
