Stoltenberg: We strive as NATO for ‘unified response’ to Turkish concerns over Sweden-Finland

LAST UPDATE: 20:38

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg stressed on Thursday that the Alliance was finding a “single way” to respond to Turkish concerns over Sweden and Finland joining the 30-nation bloc, Reuters reported.

On Wednesday, Stockholm and Helsinki had stated that they were continuing the dialogue with Ankara on the issues raised by the latter and on the basis of which it appeared ready to “block” the accession process of the two countries.

A country’s accession to NATO requires the approval of both governments and parliaments and the 30 member countries of the Alliance.

According to the secretary general, Putin with his actions and moves managed to receive a “more NATO” response, after the accession requests of the two northern European countries.

As for developments on the ground in Russia’s war against Ukraine, Stoltenberg noted that it is up to the Ukrainians alone to decide whether they would like to cede territory to Russia in order to end the war.

At the same time, the Secretary General of NATO, after the meeting he had with US President Joe Biden, stressed that Western countries must prepare for a long “war of attrition” in Ukraine.

“We have to be prepared in the long run. Because what we are seeing is that this war has now become a war of attrition,” Stoltenberg told reporters.
