Western countries should not trade their security for economic gain, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg warned today, referring to the debate over the use of Chinese technology in 5G networks and the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.
“We have to recognize that our economic choices have an impact on our security. Freedom is more important than free trade,” Stoltenberg told business leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
“I do not argue against trade with China, but I say that, for example, controlling 5G networks is vital to security,” he said.
“We can not say that for the sake of profit and free trade we will just open these networks to suppliers who are not really reliable when it comes to our security,” Stoltenberg added.
