Store will buy from customers used furniture in good condition for resale

Can’t stand that old bookcase and dining table with the mismatched chairs that once looked so modern? If you bought them from Ikea, the retailer will pay to get the properties back.

The Swedish homeware and furniture chain said on Thursday it will make its buyback and resell program permanent across its 37 US stores from April 1, after testing the offer last summer. .

The company said the service only applies to Ikea furniture for personal use, fully assembled and fully functional. It will not accept items that have been modified or altered.

Among the returnable items included in the list are: office drawer cabinets, sideboards, bookcases, coffee tables, multimedia furniture, cabinets, dining tables, tables, chairs and stools without upholstery.

The program does not extend to non-Ikea branded products or beds, sofas, mattresses, home furnishings, leather products, lamps or dressers.

Ikea has communicated that it will inspect each item for its condition, age and functionality at participating stores, and if approved, customers will receive a store credit.

The company also advised that all “used with care” items approved for resale will be available in a designated “as is” section in stores at discounted prices.

The furniture seller already offers a buyback service in the UK and Ireland as part of its sustainability effort.

Customers can trade in their used company products in excellent condition and get a store credit worth up to 50% of the original sale price.

Items in “very good” condition earn 40% credit and “well used” products receive 30% of the original price.

Ikea has 465 stores worldwide and said the initiative is part of its drive to become a “circular” business by 2030.

The objective, according to the company, is to produce products 100% made with recycled, remanufactured, refurbished or reused materials.
