Storm collapses pavilion and leaves 50 injured in a city in RS; see images

A strong windstorm hit the city of Arroio do Tigre, causing a pavilion to collapse during a local event and leaving at least 50 people injured, according to the city hall, last Sunday night (1).

The incident occurred at the Atílio Pasa Municipal Events Park, during “Cuca, Linguiça e Chopp”, a gastronomic event.

According to Civil Defense, the strong wind damaged the structure of the pavilion, causing it to collapse. The victims were quickly rescued and taken to Santa Rosa de Lima Hospital. Most of the injured have already been discharged, but some remain hospitalized for observation. One victim was transferred to Canoas due to a fractured pelvis.

According to the Arroio do Tigre Health Department, more than 50 people who were at the event park received medical care.

Among the cases, one patient was referred to the Emergency Hospital in Canoas and another to the Hospital de Caridade e Beneficência (HCB) in Cachoeira do Sul, both for specialized treatments.

Some patients remain under observation at Hospital Santa Rosa de Lima, undergoing imaging tests and other necessary procedures. The service was provided with the support of 7 doctors, 8 nurses, more than 20 nursing technicians and a dedicated support team.

In addition to the local hospital, other municipalities in the region offered support, such as Sobradinho, which sent medical teams to help care for the injured.

The mayor of Arroio do Tigre, Marciano Ravanello, reported on his social networks that in addition to the injuries, the storm caused damage in several areas of the city, according to him the Civil Defense team is carrying out a complete assessment of the damage and working to restore services essentials as quickly as possible.

Marciano also thanked the work of the health teams and everyone involved in responding to the emergency. He also asked the population to remain calm and follow the authorities’ instructions.

Civil Defense remains alert for the occurrence of heavy rain, hail and intense winds in the next few hours for Rio Grande do Sul, mainly affecting the Valleys, Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre and the Middle Coast.

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) had issued, for last Sunday, warnings of danger for storms in Rio Grande do Sul and part of Santa Catarina, with the possibility of rain between 30 and 60 mm per hour or 50 to 100 mm per day, in addition to winds of 60 to 100 km/h and hail.

The institute highlighted the risk of electricity cuts, damage to crops, falling trees and flooding.

Damage across the state

According to the Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul, at least 35 cities were affected by the storm. Look:

  • Aceguá: So far 01 house with a damaged roof
  • Arambaré: Reports of hail. Destroying and falling trees (Municipal Civil Defense responding and carrying out damage surveys)
  • Antônio Prado: Rain and strong winds
  • Arroio do Tigre: Strong wind damaged an events pavilion located in the Atílio Pasa Municipal Events Park. 30 people were injured and taken to the local hospital. All victims are in stable condition with no risk of death. Two sweeps were carried out at the site and no more injuries were found in the rubble. One victim was transferred to Canoas due to a fractured pelvis. Although, the hospital’s generators do not have the capacity to power the imaging equipment.
