Storm Bora hit Greece last weekend and left buildings and roads on the island of Rhodes covered in mud and debris this Monday (2).
In the resort of Faliraki, flooding caused by torrential rain destroyed a bridge, caused chasms to open in the ground and damaged houses and shops on the coast, Reuters drone footage showed.
In the village of Tsairi, a bridge also collapsed, cutting off residents from the main roads.
“The bridge has broken in two and there is no other easily accessible route, whether by car or on foot, to get to the main road and go anywhere,” said local resident Flora Drapanou, 31.
The fire department mobilized aerial units, sending 35 professionals from Athens with pumping equipment and two rescue boats. Additionally, 40 firefighters with 10 vehicles arrived by sea to support relief efforts.
The islands of Rhodes and Limnos declared a state of emergency.
Greece has been devastated by floods and wildfires in recent years, and scientists say the country has become a “hot spot” for climate change.
2024 is expected to be the hottest year on record, according to the WMO
