A storm generated in the Atlantic Ocean hit England and Ireland on Friday with winds of up to 160 kilometers per hour, prompting warnings from the British Meteorological Office that Storm Eunice could cause significant disruption, rip off roofs and hit London. .
Eunice has extreme wind speeds that pose a danger to life, Britain’s Meteorological Office said.
The storm reached the west of England, hitting Cornwall, where strong waves were generated because of the wind.
“Storm Eunice will bring damaging gusts in what could be one of the most impactful storms to affect the southern and central parts of the UK in years,” said Met Office Chief Meteorologist Frank Saunders.
“The red alert area indicates a significant hazard to life as extremely strong winds provide the potential for damage to structures and flying debris.”
The Met Office has warned that debris generated by the gusts of wind could result in life threatening, blowing off roofs, uprooting trees and closing roads, disrupting train and plane services in London and the south of England.
Strong winds were recorded off the south coast of England with warnings of big waves for the region. Many schools were closed. Trains were canceled or started to run at reduced speed. London reported the cancellation of 64 flights.
“Safety is our number one priority and we are canceling several flights,” an airport statement said. “We expect extreme weather conditions at UK airports as a result of Storm Eunice, which will cause significant disruption.”
These red warnings are relatively rare. The last one issued was in November 2021.
The British government will hold an emergency response meeting. Britain’s Security Minister Damian Hinds said troops were on standby to deal with the consequences of the weather.
“Everyone is in a state of readiness, on alert,” Hinds said.
