A strong storm hit Rio Grande do Sul last Sunday (19), causing damage to homes and leaving families homeless. Civil Defense is working to support affected communities, collecting data and distributing tarpaulins.
In Arroio do Meio, in Vale do Taquari, intense rains, accompanied by strong winds, resulted in three houses with serious damage and another 23 residences partially damaged. See below:
The force of the storm also knocked down five trees and two poles, blocking four roads in the city and forcing the displacement of three families. The Municipal Coordination distributed tarpaulins to affected families.
In the city of Agudo, in the central region of the state, three residences suffered partial roof damage, affecting 12 people. Teams from the Municipal Coordination were also present to provide support to the affected population.
The storm was predicted by the Civil Defense, which issued warnings to the population about the possibility of rainfall between 40 and 80 mm in a large part of the state for last Sunday (19) and this Monday (20), with peaks of up to 120 mm in the South and Extreme South.
According to Civil Defense, the passage of a low pressure area intensified the instability, bringing moderate to heavy rain, electrical discharges, storms with hail and gusts of wind that may have exceeded 80 km/h in some areas.
In addition to the damage to homes, Civil Defense warns of the hydrological risk in several river basins, including Pardo, Baixo JacuÃ, Negro, Camaquã and Mirim-São Gonçalo.
The combination of rainfall volumes between 50 and 100 mm and the high intensity of precipitation increases the risk of flooding in streams and small rivers, as well as flooding in urban areas.
