Storm Orlene that threatens Mexico could evolve into a Category 1 hurricane

Tropical Storm Orlene, which formed in the Mexican Pacific on Thursday, threatens the states of Colima and Jalisco due to its potential to become a Category 1 hurricane, Mexican officials said.

This Friday (30) is expected to become a category 1 hurricane — with winds between 119 and 153 km/h — and that by Sunday (2) it can reach category 2 winds, said Alejandra Méndez Girón, coordinator of the National Weather Service, this Thursday.

Tropical Storm Orlene is currently 455 km southwest of Manzanillo, Colima, and 470 km southwest of Playa Pérula, Jalisco, says the most recent bulletin from the National Water Commission, Conagua.

With maximum sustained winds of 85 km/h and wind gusts that reach 100 km/h, the storm has a displacement of 11 km/h, according to Conagua.

Tropical storm-force winds can be felt Friday morning in Puerto Vallarta and Saturday morning in Cabo San Lucas.

Various states on the Orlene route

On the way, Orlene will cause heavy rains in Sinaloa, Durango, Nayarit and Jalisco, as well as heavy rains in Baja California Sur, Colima and Michoacán, says a statement from Conagua.

According to the National Weather Service, tropical storm Hurricane Orlene can bring heavy rains between 25 and 50 millimeters and wind gusts between 40 km/h and 50 km/h, mainly in the states of Colima, Jalisco and Michoacán.

“The municipalities that will be most affected will be those in the south (of Mexico), because that is where the dangerous quadrant of the system is located,” Méndez Girón told reporters.

“It is also very important to mention that there have been cases of cyclonic systems where impacts occur in Sinaloa and the effects can be received both in the southern part of Sinaloa and in Nayarit.”

This cyclone could raise the level of rivers and streams and cause overflows and flooding in the affected states, Conagua said, urging residents to pay attention to official information channels and follow information from state authorities.
