The heavy rains that affect Brazil have caused the death of at least 34 people across the country since the end of November, according to a survey carried out by the CNN 🇧🇷
Santa Catarina accounted for the highest number of deaths due to the rains. The state has recorded nine deaths since the storms began, followed by Minas Gerais, with eight, and São Paulo, which reported that six people died.
Other states that registered deaths due to the rains were Rio de Janeiro (4), Sergipe (2), Paraná (2), Espírito Santo (2) and Bahia, with one death.
Thousands of people are homeless and displaced due to the rains. Civil defenses report that storms cause landslides, which end up hitting the most vulnerable population.
The impact of the water also opens holes and destroys roads in the most affected regions. In Rio de Janeiro, for example, a crater was opened on a street in the São Jorge district, in Macaé.
