Storms punish states in Brazil and leave thousands homeless

September marked the beginning of an intense rainy season in many states of Brazil, which registered thousands of people homeless after storms.

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued an alert this Wednesday (30) for much of the country, predicting heavy rainfall until Monday (5). In all, 23 states are in a state of alert.

Tocantins, Maranhão, Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul are in a state of red alert, when there are risks of serious incidents such as landslides and large floods.

On orange alert – issued when there is a risk of rain between 30 and 60 millimeters per hour or 50 and 100 millimeters per day – are Roraima, Rondônia, Piauí, Amazonas, Maranhão, Alagoas, Bahia, Pará, Pernambuco, Ceará, Paraíba, Tocantins, Espírito Santo, Mato Grosso, Sergipe, Goiás, Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro.

Registered deaths and thousands of homeless

In Minas Gerais, more than 4,000 people are away from home after the state was hit by storms. In all, 39 cities are in a state of emergency since the beginning of the rainy season.

The second death was confirmed by the Civil Defense Coordination of Minas Gerais (Cedec-MG). A 71-year-old elderly man died on Saturday (26), in Bom Jesus do Galho, after being swept away by a flood resulting from the heavy rains that hit the municipality located in the Rio Doce region.

In Bahia, around 3,000 people were displaced in the city of Prado, in the extreme south of the state.

According to the government of Espírito Santo, about six hundred people are homeless. The BR-101 highway, in Linhares, was banned after a crater opened on the track during the rains.

The SE 290 highway, in Sergipe, also had a crater opened by the rain between Itabaianinha and Tobias Barreto, leaving one person dead. Two trucks and a passenger vehicle were swallowed and carried away by the current.

The heavy rains that also hit the state of Paraná since last Saturday (26) caused a landslide on the BR-376 highway, at km 669 in Guaratuba, on the coast of the state, on the night of this Monday (28). The Federal Highway Police (PRF) confirmed two deaths and six victims were rescued alive. The number of deaths due to the landslide could reach 30, according to the state Fire Department during a press conference.
