The hit science fiction drama “Stranger Things” gives Netflix returns this week with the first part of its long-awaited fourth season, promising more supernatural terrors in the fictional town of Hawkins, in the interior of the US state of Indiana.
Set six months after the end of the third season, following the terrible battle of the Starcourt shopping mall, the fourth season sees the young protagonists separated after Eleven, played by Millie Bobbi Brown moves to California with Joyce (Winona Ryder) and their two children, Will and Jonathan.
Unable to rely on her telekinetic powers or social skills, Eleven quickly begins to be bullied. Meanwhile, in Hawkins, the rest of the teen gang makes their way through high school as a new threat emerges in the alternate dimension known as the Upside Down.
A third storyline takes care of the return of former Hawkins police chief Hopper, Eleven’s adoptive father, who is now imprisoned in Russia.
“It’s going to answer a lot of questions,” says Caleb McLaughlin, who plays Lucas.
“It’s actually an even deeper dive into some of the biggest questions a lot of fans are asking. I think people will really be pleased with this season,” added Sadie Sink, who plays Max.
Like other seasons, the recording of the nine episodes was delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic. The third season came out in 2019.
Critics approved of the new season, but everyone mentioned the length of the episodes, the last of which was two and a half hours.
“It’s a massive, massive season, and it kind of explains the wait — it’s been so long,” said Gaten Matarazzo, who plays Dustin. “We’ve been looking forward to the release, and we’re excited to see the payoff.”
