In an interview with CNN, Harvard researcher and professor Vitelio Brustolin stated that the war in Ukraine continues to be strategically dominated by Russia.
A recent Russian bombing raid in Ukraine resulted in 51 deaths and 230 injuries, highlighting the offensive capabilities of Russian forces.
Brustolin stressed that although the Ukrainian government is investing in counterattacks, the strategic initiative in the conflict remains in Russia’s hands.
Superiority in military resources
The expert presented data that illustrates Russia’s advantage in terms of military resources.
While the UK has signed a contract to manufacture 120,000 units of artillery ammunition for Ukraine over the next 18 months, Russia produces 250,000 units of the same type of ammunition every month.
Furthermore, Brustolin highlighted Russia’s ability to recruit soldiers from peripheral regions, minimizing the internal social and political impact.
This strategy allows Russia to maintain a significant numerical superiority in terms of troops.
Challenges for Ukrainian defense
The researcher also pointed out the difficulties faced by Ukraine in defending against Russian attacks.
According to him, the missiles used in the recent bombing were too fast to be intercepted by the Ukrainian defense system, demonstrating the country’s vulnerability to the Russian arsenal.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed frustration with the situation, highlighting the urgent need for operational missiles rather than stockpiles held by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) on Ukrainian territory that cannot be freely used by the country’s armed forces.
Brustolin concluded that, despite Ukrainian efforts and international support, Russia maintains a position of strategic advantage in the conflict, with greater freedom of action and superior military resources.
The analysis highlights the ongoing challenges Ukraine faces in seeking a balance of power in the war.
