Strategy Analytics estimates that smartphone app processor sales hit record highs in 2020

According to a report by Strategy Analytics, the global applications processor (AP versus network processor) market has returned to revenue growth in 2020 for the first time since 2016.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the AP market for smartphones showed resilience and grew 25% year over year. In 2020, it reached $ 25 billion. The main suppliers are Qualcomm, Apple, HiSilicon, MediaTek and Samsung LSI. Leadership belongs to Qualcomm. This manufacturer alone holds 31% of the market. In second place is Apple with 23%, in third – HiSilicon with 18%.

When it comes to the companies that actually make the chips, TSMC has two-thirds of the AP market for smartphones. The second place is taken by Samsung Foundry. Both manufacturers are faced with strong demand for models manufactured at the advanced 7nm and 5nm standards. Such models accounted for nearly 40% of all smartphone APs shipped in 2020.
