Street blocks in SP must take place in private or controlled places, says secretary

The secretary of the boroughs and member of the Carnival Commission of the city of São Paulo, Alexandre Modonezi, told CNN on Tuesday night (5) that there are no conditions to authorize the street carnival to be held the way it was before the pandemic.

“The parades of the blocks can only take place in private places or with some type of control, where the organizers are able to guarantee the structure and safety of the events”, he says.

The reason, according to him, is the lack of time to organize the biggest event in the capital, which can bring together around 18 million people. The secretary also stressed that it normally takes six months to organize the parades, which involve areas such as public safety, medical care, traffic and bidding.

“The risk to life involved is very great, so you have to be responsible,” he said.

Earlier, the mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), informed that the city hall can authorize the parade of blocks during Carnival, on Tiradentes holiday, as long as organizers guarantee safety and infrastructure conditions.

The city hall has already clarified that it does not have time to organize the street party – which was canceled in January because of the Ômicron variant of the coronavirus, with the consent of entities linked to street carnival.

Despite the cancellation of the parades in the streets, Acadêmicos do Baixo Augusta, one of the most traditional blocks in the capital, announced the holding of a party in Vale do Anhangabaú on holiday in Tiradentes. The space was granted to the private sector, therefore, it will follow the rules established by the government until now.
