Street carnival in SP should bring together 15 million revelers, predicts city hall

The City Hall of São Paulo released this Thursday (2), the expectations and plans for the street carnival in the capital. The first parades will take place on February 11th and will last until the 26th. The expectation of the city hall is that 15 million revelers will participate in the revelry.

There are 511 blocks confirmed in all regions of the city, in addition to concerts by Pablo Vittar , Luisa Sonza , Lexa and Michel Telo .

The Municipal Secretariat for Human Rights and Citizenship will participate in the street carnival with its specialized mobile units for assisting women victims of violence, and mobile units for assisting the LGBTQIA+ population.

The division of the blocks by region leaves the west zone as the protagonist with 145 parades. Next comes the Centro region with 121, the south zone with 102 and, lastly, the east zone with 68 parades. The Municipal Secretariat of Subprefectures (SMSUB) used the route map to define the infrastructure for the scheduled parades and the plan involved joint action with various security agencies.

Around 670 parades registered for the São Paulo Carnival, but the Secretariat of Culture recorded the cancellation of 154 of them. A group that brings together about 100 blocks from the city, called “Arrastão dos Blocos”, is protesting against the City Hall of São Paulo. They allege “disorganization when attending to all blocks”.

One of the most traditional and popular blocks in the city, “Tarado Ni Você”, will not parade this year. According to the Secretariat of Culture of São Paulo, “the block submitted its registration after the registration period and all requests with late registrations were denied to maintain the principle of isonomy.” THE CNN tried to contact the organization of “Tarado Ni Você”, but did not get a response until the publication of this article.

Some of the parade representatives in São Paulo released a joint note last Wednesday (1), commenting and asking for more organization on the part of the capital’s City Hall.

“It is necessary to delimit the roles and responsibilities for the various aspects of the party. The blocks fit popular culture: music, dance, costumes and allegories, the rites of future ancestors. Public authorities have the notorious functions of management, mediation of public space, construction of public policy with social participation, care for the people”, says an excerpt from the released statement.

The Secretariat of Culture, in turn, informs that “All blocks had individual negotiations on routes, times and dates with the representative commission. The meetings of the blocks with their respective subprefectures have been held daily since the last weeks of January”.
