Strike partially paralyzes buses in São Paulo; caster is suspended

The city of São Paulo dawned this Tuesday (14) with bus lines partially paralyzed, due to a strike by drivers and collectors, decided on the night of this Monday (13).

An injunction by the Labor Court, on May 31, guaranteed the São Paulo City Hall that 80% of the fleet operates during peak hours, which go from 6:00 am to 9:00 am and from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, and 60% at other times, under penalty of a daily fine of R$ 50 thousand.

“The injunction remains valid and SPTrans expects it to be fulfilled. The manager will monitor the fleet from the beginning of the operation”, informed the City to the CNN in note.

Due to the strike, the São Paulo Traffic Engineering Company (CET) suspended the rotation of vehicles, allowing the circulation of plates with endings 3 and 4, this Tuesday (14).

On the night of this Monday (13), the Union of Drivers and Workers in Urban Road Transport of São Paulo (Sindmotoristas) announced that “even after insistent attempts at negotiation, the directions of the Salary Campaign of São Paulo drivers ended up in the Regional Labor Court. (TRT), resulting in the stoppage of the category from 0:00 on this Tuesday (14)”.

The Union claims a salary readjustment of 12.47%, referring to the National Consumer Price Index (INPC).

“At first, the employers’ sector insisted on offering only 10% of readjustment and still in installments. Now, they offered the 12.47%, but only as of October, which is unacceptable”, declared the acting president of the union, Valmir Santana da Paz.

The trial of the strike agreement is scheduled for this Wednesday (15), at 15:00.

Court decision and increase in trains and subway

This Tuesday (14), with the start of the stoppage, the City of São Paulo reiterated the decision of the Labor Court at the end of last month, which guarantees the partial maintenance of the bus fleet, under the condition of a fine.

“SPTrans will ask the Justice to collect this fine, in addition to fine companies for not complying with the trips”, the City Hall told CNN.

“SPTrans continues to monitor the negotiation between businessmen and workers and expects a brief resolution between the parties, so that the population of São Paulo is not penalized,” he added..

In addition, the São Paulo Metropolitan Transport Department (STM) reported that, due to the strike, the maximum offer of trains in circulation was brought forward and the peak hours were extended.

“Metrô, CPTM, ViaQuatro and ViaMobilidade will have reserve trains in operational conditions on all lines to meet demand,” STM said in a note.

The Municipal Vehicle Rotation was also suspended by CET. “Due to the strike by drivers and collectors, the Municipal Vehicle Rotation is suspended. Plates with ending 3 and 4 can circulate. All other restrictions will remain in effect.”
