A 6.2-magnitude earthquake was recorded today off the northern coast of Papua New Guinea, the US Geological Survey (USGS) announced. The earthquake was centered in a sea area 300 kilometers east of the town of Vanimo, which will welcome the head of the Roman Catholic Church, Francis, at the end of the week. No tsunami warning was issued. An AFP photojournalist found no serious damage in the town of Ouek, on the northern coast of Papua New Guinea. Earthquakes are common in the country, which is located on the so-called “Ring of Fire”, a zone of intense tectonic activity in Southeast Asia, in the Pacific Ocean. Although they generally cause limited damage to the sparsely populated highlands and jungles of Papua New Guinea, catastrophic landslides do occasionally occur. Source: RES
