The four members of the Middle East Quartet (UN, EU, US and Russia) have expressed “grave concern” about the violence in Jerusalem which has resulted in more than 200 injuries.
The Quartet “Expresses deep concern over the daily violence and clashes in East Jerusalem, especially last night, between Palestinians and Israeli security forces in Haram al-Sharif / Temple Mount”, the team said in a statement.
“I am alarmed by the provocative statements made by some political groups, the firing of rockets and incendiary balloons from Gaza into Israel, and the attacks on Palestinian farms in the West Bank.”, the announcement added.
The Quartet “notes its deep concern at the possible expulsion of Palestinian families from their homes where they have lived for generations (…) and opposes unilateral action, which simply escalates into an already tense environment.”
“We call on the Israeli authorities to show restraint and to refrain from any action that could escalate the situation during this period of Muslim holy days.”, continued the text.
New clashes on Saturday night left 53 injured in various neighborhoods of East Jerusalem, a day after the most extensive clashes in recent years in the Holy City, which have raised fears of a new escalation of violence.
According to the Palestinian Red Crescent, at least 17 people were injured by plastic bullets fired by Israeli security forces, with a French Agency photographer reporting seeing a woman with blood on her face.
Israeli security forces used flash grenades, plastic bullets and armored personnel carriers to disperse crowds of Palestinian protesters. Some of the latter were throwing objects in the direction of the police, with one police officer being injured in the head, according to the police.
For weeks, tensions remain high in Jerusalem and in the West Bank, where Palestinians are protesting against Israeli restrictions on access to certain areas during Ramadan and the possible expulsion of Palestinians to the Sheikh Jara district.
