An earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale occurred in the early hours of Monday 26/8 (Greece time), in Tonga according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), as foreign leaders gathered for an important regional summit. As the USGS points out, the epicenter of the earthquake is located about 72 kilometers west of the city of Pangai. Tonga’s coastal capital, Nuku’alofa, is hosting the Pacific Islands Forum, with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres among the dignitaries.
