Two people were killed and at least 18 were injured in a powerful explosion at a four-storey building under renovation in central Madrid on Friday, according to Spanish authorities.
Two men working on the building were killed in the blast, Madrid Mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida said on Friday night. Of the 18 people injured, most were not serious, authorities said.
Earlier, the mayor announced that four people were taken to hospital, one in serious condition, adding that the causes of the explosion have not yet been clarified.
“Some work was being done on the building” in the Salamanca district where the blast took place, he said.
“Firefighters are inside the building and are checking to see if there are any trapped people inside,” he told Telemadrid.
Emergency services spokeswoman Gemma Martin said a school across the building had not been damaged and there was no need to evacuate the children.
