Thousands of residents of northern Buenos Aires province in Argentina were removed on Saturday (17), while the rains punished the region, which is an important agricultural pole, and caused serious flooding.
The national weather service, which issued red alert to the region on Friday night (16), reported rainfall between 150 and 250 mm between the cities of Zárate and Arrefes. He warned that the storms were “constantly regenerating”, with more rain forecast.
Television images showed residents of Zárate, 100 km from the capital, sailing through submerged streets in boats laden with belongings.
A long distance bus with 44 passengers was trapped in the flood waters on Route 9, near Zárate. “The water started in and covered everything,” the driver told local C5N television channel.
In San Antonio de Areco, more than 260 mm fell in 24 hours – a number that Mayor Francisco Ratto called “rarely overcome”.
Strong precipitation in the important food exporting region is expected to cause new delays in the soybean harvesting.
Argentina is the largest global exporter of soybean bran and oil, as well as being the third largest exporter of corn and an important wheat exporter.
