Strong Russian reaction to the development of new US nuclear weapons in Europe

The Politico wrote that the United States indicated in a closed-door NATO meeting that ia speed up development of an advanced version of the B61, the B61-12, with the new weapons arriving at European bases in Decemberseveral months earlier than planned.

Russia has hit back by saying that accelerating US deployment of advanced B61 tactical nuclear weapons at NATO bases in Europe will reduce the “nuclear threshold” and how Russia will take this move into account in its military planning.

“We cannot ignore plans to modernize nuclear weaponsof these unguided bombs that are in Europe,” Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grusko told the state-run RIA news agency.

“The United States is modernizing them, increasing their accuracy and reducing the power of the nuclear payload, i.e. turning these weapons into “battlefield weapons“, thereby reducing the nuclear threshold,” Grusko added.

THE bomb B61-12 it carries a lower-yield nuclear warhead than previous versions but is more accurate and can penetrate underground, according to research by the Federation of American Scientists.
