Students attack teacher in classroom in Rio for internet challenge and are suspended by school

English teacher Ana Paula Loureiro says she was attacked in the classroom by 6th year elementary school students at Colégio Pedro II, in Rio.

According to the school’s English department, the students were motivated by an “unacceptable challenge” from a social network.

The challenge consists of “slapping the class teacher, and, when possible, filming the scene of aggression”, informed the school.

Ana Paula was replacing the class’s main teacher. At the end of the class, while she was with her head down taking notes, she said she was slapped on the back of the head.

The episode occurred at the Humaitá unit, in the south zone of Rio. The school said it has observed “a significant increase, on the part of students, in actions that generate violence, resulting from several factors, but mainly from a lack of respect”.

Suspension

The students involved were suspended for two days and included in a disciplinary process, which will establish what measures will be adopted in relation to the case.

The teacher involved filed a police report at the 10th Police Station in Rio de Janeiro. She was accompanied by the school unit’s management.

Pedro II informed that a commission was formed, with three members of the teaching staff, which investigated the facts involving the students and the teacher. The process takes place in secrecy, in compliance with the Child and Adolescent Statute.

Furthermore, the Guardianship Council and the Federal Public Ministry were informed about the attacks.
