Students create AI system to detect drowsiness at the wheel

Students from the State Full-Time Center (CETI) Moacir Madeira Campos, in Teresina (PI), developed a system that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to detect drowsiness in drivers.

The project, created by high school students integrated into the Internet IT technical course, aims to reduce traffic accidents caused by fatigue, the third biggest cause of accidents in Brazil, representing around 40% of cases on federal highways, according to the Association Brazilian Association of Traffic Medicine (Abramet).

The system uses a camera and computer vision to analyze the driver’s facial features, such as eyes, mouth and nose. When it identifies signs of fatigue, it issues alerts. The technology, built with the Python language, will also be able to detect drunk drivers in the future.

“Our objective is to train the system to also identify drivers under the influence of alcohol, which can further expand its contribution to traffic safety”, explained Professor Dougllas Oliveira, project advisor.

The project stands out for its accessibility, seeking to offer a low-cost alternative to similar systems that only exist in luxury vehicles. The idea came up during the Careers Fair, in which the group chose the theme “Traffic Safety”.

Students hope the system will help prevent accidents, especially those that occur late at night or early in the morning.

“These cases of drowsiness in traffic cause many accidents, especially at dawn or early in the morning. Our biggest goal is to expand this technology to more people and save lives”, commented Marcos Portela, one of the students who developed the project.
