For those who learn from an early age, knowing how to read, write or simply interpret texts correctly may seem simple and, in a way, irrelevant. But, unfortunately, this is not the reality for many Brazilians.
According to indicators from the National Illiteracy Index, some sectors of the economy, such as domestic services, agriculture and construction, are the most affected.
That is why MRV, seeing its role in this scenario, defined a clear goal for the coming years – to eliminate the number of illiterate and functionally illiterate people on the company’s construction sites.
To achieve this goal, MRV relies on Escola Nota 10, a program created and maintained by the company, which in over 10 years has taught almost 5,000 students to read and write.
The focus is on literacy training on the construction site itself. Therefore, classes are held during working hours. Learning on the construction site itself is an opportunity for workers who would not previously have access to education. In this way, the program manages to integrate the professional routine into the learning process.
In addition to offering literacy training, the program offers vocational courses in areas such as masonry, plumbing, tiling and painting. The courses range from primary to secondary education and include specializations, carried out in partnership with Alicerce Educação, SESI (Social Service of Industry), SENAI (National Service for Industrial Training) and some unions in the Civil Construction Industry.
And to celebrate this year’s World Literacy Day, celebrated on September 8th, MRV took eleven of its employees, who are part of the program, for an unforgettable experience.
First, students from various regions of the country had the opportunity to visit the company’s headquarters in Belo Horizonte. The following day, they visited the MRV Arena, the home of Galo, where they entered the field with the team at the time of the match. What the students didn’t know was that the players’ shirts were printed with the names and numbers written by the players themselves. And to top it all off, one of the students in the program read and announced the Atlético Mineiro team’s lineup over the Arena’s sound system.
An action that celebrated literacy and raised awareness about the importance of the topic.
The largest construction company in Latin America, MRV, believes in the transformative power that a home has on each person’s life. But it also wants to transform people’s lives through education.
