Students harmed by the pandemic are not doomed to fail, says expert

The educational policy leader of Todos Pela Educação, Gabriel Corrêa, believes that the percentage of students affected by the pandemic cannot be treated as if they were “doomed to failure.”

“These are not effects mitigated in a few months, it will take a few years [para recuperar], but it is possible to face these challenges. It may take 2, 3 years, but we can recover,” he said in an interview with CNN Radioin the board CNN Education.

A technical note from Todos Pela Educação indicates that the number of children aged 6 and 7 in Brazil who cannot read and write grew by 66.3% from 2019 to 2021.

“The data these data bring more evidence of how the impacts of the pandemic have been severe and strong, unevenly, reaching more black and poorer students, it is important to shed light on this problem because it is in the hands of the public to implement actions that allow us to overcome these effects”, he analyzed.

According to Gabriel Corrêa, the first step is to bring children back to schools. “But it is not enough for them to be in schools, it is necessary to re-establish links with the students, identify those who have not learned to read and write.”

From there, according to the specialist, it will be necessary to develop specific programs for each of them, with reinforcement, teaching materials and specific teachers, in addition to more time in schools.
