The federal government announced that from March 7, students will be able to renegotiate the debts of the Student Financing Fund (FIES). The possibility of renegotiation will be available until the end of August.
The Ministry of Economy estimates that in total there are about R$ 87 billion in debt. The renegotiation was instituted via a provisional measure edited by President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in December 2021 and signed on Thursday (10).
For students who have debts that are 90 to 360 days overdue, the discount available will be 12% of the total amount, in addition to the exemption of interest and fines. The debt can be paid in up to 150 installments.
For those with more than 360 days of delay, the discount will be 86.5% of the total debt amount, in addition to interest and fines exemption.
For those enrolled in the Cadastro Único para Programas Sociais (CadÚnico) and Auxílio Emergencial, the discount increases to 92% of the total amount. The minimum down payment for renegotiations is R$ 200.
