Standing for a long time not only does not help cardiovascular health, it can also increase the risk of developing circulatory diseases. This is what the results of research conducted by scientists at the University of Sydney, Australia, indicate.
The study, published in International Journal Of Epidemiology this Wednesday (16), contradicts the general understanding that has led people from all over the world to combat sedentary lifestyle, avoiding sitting as much as possible and blaming themselves for every moment they are at rest. Standing without doing any physical exercise is not synonymous with health, as explained by Matthew N. Ahmadi, leader of the research.
“The main conclusion is that standing for a long time does not compensate for a sedentary lifestyle and can be risky for some people in terms of circulatory health. We found that standing for longer does not improve cardiovascular health in the long term and increases the risk of circulatory problems”, said the professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney in an interview with News Medical.
The study was conducted over a period of seven to eight years with more than 83,000 people, monitored using devices simulating smartwatches in the United Kingdom. The results also indicated that spending more than 10 hours a day sitting can also increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and orthostatic hypotension — that is, a drop in blood pressure when standing up. In other words, spending a lot of time sitting, as well as standing for a long time, is also harmful to your health.
According to research, maintaining a daily routine of at least 6 minutes of vigorous exercise or 30 minutes of moderate exercise is ideal for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. The formula is even valid for people who spend more than 11 hours a day highly sedentary, as the study points out.
