Stunning pink diamond could fetch over $21 million at auction

A dazzling pink diamond, described as one of the purest in the world, could fetch more than $21 million when it goes up for auction in October in Hong Kong, auction house Sotheby’s said on Wednesday.

At 11.15 carats, the cushion-shaped gemstone is called the “Williamson Pink Star”, named after two other pink diamonds.

One is the “CTF Pink Star,” a 59.60-carat oval diamond that sold for a record $71.2 million at auction in 2017.

The other is the “Williamson” stone – a 23.60 carat diamond given to Queen Elizabeth as a wedding gift by Canadian geologist John Thorburn Williamson. Worn by the monarch on a Cartier brooch, the diamond was discovered in the Williamson mine in Tanzania.

The “Williamson Pink Star” diamond also originates from this same mine.

“[Diamantes rosa] are exceptionally rare in nature,” Kristian Spofforth, head of jewelry at Sotheby’s, told Reuters in a press preview.

“You then add in the extra factors like being over 10 carats, internally flawless and Type IIA, and you get to the pinnacle of it,” he added, referring to a subset of the chemically purest diamonds.

High-quality colored gemstones are prized by the super-rich, and Spofforth said he expects high bids for the diamond when it goes up for sale in a standalone auction on Oct. 5.

“We’ve seen during the lockdown crisis and the Covid crisis that there’s always demand for the rare and beautiful in the world, and that’s something exceptionally rare that I think will get a lot of bids in the day,” he said.

Prior to the auction, the “Williamson Pink Star” will tour Dubai, Singapore and Taipei before arriving in Hong Kong.
