Subaru recalls a thousand electric cars: their wheels can unscrew on the go

Today’s electric cars are amazing with their technology, advanced features and autonomous driving, but the build quality of vehicles with electric propulsion seems to be no different from conventional ICE cars. For example, yesterday, February 11, PR Newswire, citing its sources, reported very interesting news that a fresh Subaru electric car had serious difficulties – a Solterra vehicle can literally lose wheels while driving, so exploit this an electric car is simply life-threatening.

Of course, if this happens at a low speed, then the car will simply be badly damaged, but losing wheels when driving on highways is, of course, highly undesirable. Accordingly, the company’s employees have already launched a recall campaign that will recall more than a thousand electric vehicles, mainly in the United States, for maintenance and troubleshooting. And if you believe the information from the Electrek publication, this problem has already arisen with a Subaru vehicle, but it was probably not possible to solve the problem of wheels falling off on the go on the first try.

Experts also note that in fact, technically, the problem is solved very simply, and the user, if desired, can even do it at home, but, of course, the company is forced to launch a full-fledged recall campaign and service cars in a service center. The fact is that in the process of assembling the electric car, the nuts that fix the rims on the hub were not tightened enough on the “studs” – as a result, during movement and vibration, they can unwind even more and finally fly off. And although the chance that five nuts will be unscrewed at once is extremely low, the risks are very high.

It is also worth recalling that the problem of wheels that open while driving is already becoming the norm for Japanese brands. Earlier, Toyota was forced to launch a similar recall campaign for literally the same reason – the wheels on the bZ4X were not tightened enough on the hubs, and for some reason the quality control missed this moment. Then the brand had to recall a lot of electric cars, as they could cause an accident, including a fatal one. It’s amazing how in a world of cars that can park and change lanes on their own, the factory can’t just tighten the screws.
