Subvariants of Ômicron rescue the chance of lung injury, infectologist alert

In an interview with CNN Radio infectious disease specialist Marcelo Otsuka warned amid the escalation of Covid-19 cases in Brazil again: “These subvariants of Ômicron that are circulating rescue the chance of lung injuries.”

According to him, who is vice-president of the Department of Infectious Diseases of the Society of Pediatrics of São Paulo, BA4 and BA.5 differ from the first identified strain of Ômicron.

“Before we had flu symptoms, such as a sore throat, but we started to see more severe pulmonary cases again, we cannot think that the virus will be calmer, it can, yes, get serious again”, he explained.

Otsuka highlights that, at this moment, it is essential to seek vaccination: “The booster dose provides greater protection for hospitalization, serious cases and deaths.”

He recalled that “over time, the immune response for both those who have already been infected and those who have had the vaccine decreases.”

In the opinion of the infectious disease specialist, there are two paths that can help to reverse the increase in infections and deaths from Covid-19: encouraging vaccination and active search for those who have delayed doses.

“It is up to all governments, in all instances – federal, state and municipal – to ensure that we have a policy to encourage vaccination, we have seen little and we need to go to the patient, so that he can be vaccinated at all times when this happens. possibility, as in schools”.
