Subway accident can interfere with city logistics costs, says economist

In an interview with CNN This Tuesday (1st), the economist and mobility specialist, Vladimir Maciel, spoke about the impacts that the accident that occurred in a subway project in São Paulo, this Tuesday, can bring to the city and to the population of São Paulo. The economist stressed that logistics costs will be the most affected and that the accident will cause damage to all residents.

An accident in a construction of Line 6 – Orange of the subway in São Paulo made a piece of Marginal Tietê, one of the capital’s main roads, collapsed on Tuesday morning (1st). There were no casualties recorded.

According to the interviewee, considering the 2020 values in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, the cost of congestion impacts approximately R$ 15.00 for each resident.

“Today we interrupted the local and central lane of the marginal, but the stretch is very demanding for cargo and people; it is very connected to other highways and the airport, it has a generalized effect for the entire city of São Paulo. If we took these 15 reais an hour and calculated, what would be the effect of this accident, this interruption? Between 5 and 10 minutes daily increase in the movement of people and goods, as long as this interruption lasts”, he explained.

The economist highlighted that the work is being carried out in a public-private partnership, that the investment resources are from the Spanish company, however, this means that when the line is ready and operating it will cost more because of the accident.

“As this initial cost of the work will be increased with the accident, this means that the state government will have to increase the subsidy for the operation of this line, that is, everyone who pays tax in São Paulo will have to pay more for it”, stated.

Vladimir Maciel stated that the cargo and merchandise sector will be the most affected, and the services sector in second place.

“First logistics and all parts of merchandise and inputs, and then the service sector that uses the marginal road as a means of transportation. Companies that can change their hours of operation can change their hours, not all of them can, so there’s not much to do,” he said.
