Starting this Friday (12), subway users in Rio de Janeiro started paying R$7.50 for their ticket. The previous value, of R$6.90, has been in effect since April 12, 2022.
According to Metrô Rio, the concessionaire that manages the system, the 8.7% adjustment follows the variation in the Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) between January 2023 and January 2024, which was 4.5% .
End of pandemic benefit
In addition to the inflationary correction, the new fare also reflects the end of a benefit granted during the Covid-19 pandemic, which had reduced the amount charged to passengers.
In a statement, Metrô Rio stated that the annual fare adjustment is provided for in the concession contract and aims to “guarantee the economic-financial balance of the system”.
The concessionaire also highlighted that, even with the increase, subway tickets in Rio remain among the cheapest in the country, below capitals such as São Paulo (R$5), Belo Horizonte (R$4.25) and Porto Alegre (R$ 4.70).
