Subway resumes operation after collapse that affected 57 thousand passengers

The operation of Metrôrio line 2 was restored late on Wednesday (9), after a incident that paralyzed part of the system for more than four hours and impacted more than 57 thousand passengers .

At the beginning of the day, a 30 -meter stretch of the wall near the Queen’s Engenho Station collapsed, compromising the circulation of the trains and forcing the temporary closure of 11 stations.

According to the subway, the collapse was caused by an external work of the concessionaire Águas do Rio, which was performing a service in the immediate vicinity of the subway system without the subway had been previously informed. To ensure safety, line 2 had to be designed, and the trains properly circulated between the Maria da Graça and Botafogo stations.

In all, 32 subway employees worked in the occurrence, alongside teams from Águas do Rio, allowing the operation to resume. The reopened stations were: Pavuna, Engineer Rubens Paiva, Acari/Fazenda Botafogo, Coelho Neto, College, Irajá, Vicente de Carvalho, Thomaz Coelho, Rainha, Inhauma and Del Castilho.

During the occurrence, passengers were guided by teams at stations and sound notices. Those affected by the interruption received the “Siga Viagem” ticket, which guarantees the continuity of the route in other means of transport, according to the regulatory agency protocol.

To assist in the movement of users during peak hours, Rio Bus reported that six lines that usually have a final point in front of Del Castilho do Metro station were provisionally extended to Maria da Graça station.

In a statement, Águas do Rio stressed that it continues with teams working on Avenida Martin Luther King Jr., in the Queen Engine, both in removing the rubble of the wall that reached the rails and in the emergency repair of a leak in a large tubing, identified on Tuesday afternoon (8).

Concessionaires act together in the removal of wreckage. Once this step is completed, the wall will be rebuilt. The forecast, according to Águas do Rio, is that repairs to the piping will be finalized until tomorrow (10).

Due to the service, the water supply is temporarily reduced in various neighborhoods of the North Zone: Engenho da Rainha, São Francisco Xavier, Mangueira, Screening, Maria da Graça, Inhauma, Del Castilho, Jacaré, Jacarezinho and Rocha. Upon completion of the work, the normalization of the supply will be done gradually. The concessionaire guides residents to use water available only for essential activities.

The subway reported that it continues to monitor the system and support passengers while the external works continue.
