Sudan is facing one of the worst humanitarian crises in decades

The war in Sudan has caused “one of the worst humanitarian crises” in decades, the international president of Doctors Without Borders (MSF) Christos Christou said today. “Sudan is suffering from one of the worst crises the world has seen in decades (…) and the humanitarian response is deeply inadequate,” Mr. Christou stressed in X. “Across the country extreme levels of suffering and needs are increasing day by day,” he added. The war in Sudan broke out in April 2023 between the army under General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo. The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced more than nine million, according to the UN. Both sides have been accused of war crimes, notably for deliberately targeting civilians, shelling populated areas and blocking humanitarian aid, despite millions of Sudanese at risk of starvation.
