Sudan: Massive security crackdown ahead of new protests against military rule

Security forces in riot gear stormed a rally on Friday, removing hundreds of protesters by truck, as protesters marched on a jail holding others detained.

Roads leading to the general staff of the armed forces in the center of the capital have been blocked by an imposing deployment of security forces, mainly riot police, paramilitary forces and the army, the same sources added.

Despite the deadly crackdown, the Sudanese Professional Union, which was the spearhead of the uprising against General Omar el-Besir, who was overthrown in 2019 by the army under street pressure, as well as against the military after its coup October 25, called for new demonstrations today.

At the request of a political power, the organizers call on the protesters to take to the streets and march on the presidential palace in Khartoum “until they achieve victory”.

The military is in power alone after the resignation of Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok on Sunday, sparking fears of a return to the dictatorship, which has been plunged into deadly violence since the coup.

The tragic death toll from the Oct. 25 coup, led by Army Chief of Staff General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has risen to 57, according to a pro-democracy doctor.

Protesters were raped, according to the UN, many journalists were beaten and even arrested, while the Internet and telephone communications only work at the will of the authorities.

On October 25, General Burhan extended his term by two years, setting aside any idea of a transfer of power to the people at the end of the transition, which still holds promise for July 2023 with elections.

Two months later, Burhan issued an “urgent decree” authorizing security forces to “enter every building, search it, and search its occupants” and “conduct surveillance and seizures.”

The security forces can do all this only by informing the Sovereignty Council, which he leads, and by bypassing justice.

At the end of November, after being held under house arrest for a month, Hamdock returned to his post in agreement with General Burhan. He was the political figure of the transition and finally resigned on Sunday, judging that it is impossible for him to remain in his position.
