Sudan: One dead in protest against military regime

A protester was killed yesterday Thursday (5/5) in Khartoum by Sudanese security forces during rally against the military juntaannounced doctors.

The victim, whose details have not been released, was “crushed by armor (supporting) the coup (army on October 25) during a march on Khartoum to the presidency,” the Central Committee said in a statement. Doctors of Sudan, an independent organization that is part of the democratization movement in the African country.

The death toll rises to 95 as people have fallen victim to the crackdown on mass protests in the capital and other Sudanese cities following the ouster of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

Hundreds of people took part in a rally against the military junta on Thursday to demand that the military “return to their barracks” once again.

They also denounced the mismanagement by the economic leaders of Sudan, a country ruled by the military almost continuously for 66 years since independence.

Sudan, one of the poorest countries in the world, lost the international aid it provided – accounting for 40% of its revenue – after the military coup. The Sudanese pound has collapsed; the population is feeling the noose around its neck in the midst of a dizzying rise in grain and oil prices following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
